For those who can read the cover of this book, it only cost 1 franc and 25 cents to buy, what a steal! However, in today's money, that's around 22.75 USD if you take into account inflation. This book is pure crochet bliss! It was so fun to read about someone so passionate about this craft centuries before me. I guess things never change! But, one thing that I am grateful for in this modern age is videos. I feel like I never would have enough patience to make each stitch without seeing it firsthand...

Ce petit Manuel étant destiné à l’instruction seulement, nous supprimons toute introduction superflue pour consacrer plus d’espace à la partie descriptive de l’initiation première, la rendre plus complète et accroître ainsi la valeur de ce livre.
L’art de tricoter, dans lequel une longue pratique est nécessaire pour atteindre un degré raisonnable de progrès et de force, est bien différent du travail au crochet, quoiqu’il lui ressemble beaucoup. Le travail au crochet est à la portée de tous ceux qui voudront suivre attentivement et mettre en pratique les instructions contenues dans les vingt pages suivantes ; et nous recommandons aux commençants de les suivre bien en détail et pas à pas ; d’avoir toujours le crochet en main pour exécuter chaque nouveau point ou maille ; de l’apprendre durant un certain temps avant de passer à une autre difficulté.

Lorsqu’on sera bien familiarisé avec les noms donnés à chacun de ces points ou mailles, et avec la manière de les former, on ne rencontrera plus aucune difficulté pour exécuter les modèles, ou confectionner les articles décrits dans le reste du volume, qu’on essaye trop souvent avant d’avoir une connaissance assez grande des éléments, et cela parce que l’impatience empêche de consacrer à l’étude des instructions préliminaires, les trois ou quatre heures suffisantes pour les bien connaître.

La laine est préférable au coton, lorsqu’on veut apprendre ; et celle de Berlin, double, est plus agréable à travailler à cause de ses nombreuses variétés.

En faisant choix d’un crochet pour s’en servir avec la laine, il faut le prendre de préférence en os ou en ivoire, plutôt qu’en acier, ayant la tête ronde plutôt que plate ; cette dernière forme présentant des inconvénients ; il faut qu’il soit aussi long qu’il est convenable, et que le crampon soit d’une mesure telle que la laine le remplisse parfaitement, de manière que l’arrêté ne projette pas au-delà.

Supposons le commençant muni de la laine et du crochet, nous allons donner la première leçon.

THE ART OF CROCHET.

This little manual being intended solely for instruction, we omit any superfluous introduction in order to dedicate more space to the descriptive part of the initial training, to make it more complete and thus increase the value of this book.

The art of knitting, in which long practice is necessary to reach a level of ...reasonable progress and skill, is quite different from crochet work, although it closely resembles it. Crochet is within reach of all who are willing to follow attentively and put into practice the instructions contained in the following twenty pages. We recommend that beginners follow them carefully, step by step; that they always keep the crochet hook in hand to execute each new stitch; and that they spend some time mastering each step before moving on to the next difficulty.

Once one is well familiar with the names of each of the stitches and the way they are formed, no difficulty will remain in executing the patterns or making the items described in the rest of this volume—which one too often attempts before having a strong enough grasp of the basics, simply because impatience prevents one from spending the three or four hours needed to study the preliminary instructions thoroughly.

Wool is preferable to cotton when one is learning; and Berlin wool, being double, is more pleasant to work with because of its many varieties.

When choosing a crochet hook to use with wool, one should prefer bone or ivory* over steel, with a round head rather than a flat one—the latter presenting disadvantages. It should also be of a length that is suitable, and that the and that the hook’s shaft is sized such that the wool fills it perfectly, so that the edge does not stick out beyond it.

Let us suppose the beginner is equipped with yarn and hook—we shall now begin the first lesson.
